**A one-step challenge has a single profit target to pass. A two-step challenge has two phases, usually a larger target first and a smaller one second.** Most futures prop firms use one step, while two-step challenges are common at forex firms. Neither is automatically easier; the numbers inside each step decide that.

## Key takeaways

- One step is faster. Two steps split the work into two smaller targets.
- Most futures evaluations are one step, with a target about 6% of the account.
- Forex two-step challenges often ask for a larger first target and a smaller second one.
- Compare each target with the drawdown, not the number of steps.

## What is a one-step challenge?

You reach one profit target while staying inside the loss limits, then move to a funded account. On a 50K futures account, that's usually a $3,000 target against a $2,000 drawdown. It's the quickest route to funding, because there's only one finish line.

## What is a two-step challenge?

You pass phase one, then pass phase two, often with a smaller target. The loss limits usually stay the same in both phases. Because each target is reached separately, a two-step challenge takes longer, but each individual target can be easier to reach.

## Which is easier? A worked example

Take two 100K challenges, each with a static $10,000 maximum loss:

| | One step | Two steps |
| -------------------- | -------- | ----------------------- |
| Targets | $10,000 | $8,000, then $5,000 |
| Total profit needed | $10,000 | $13,000 |
| Target vs loss limit | 1 to 1 | 0.8 to 1, then 0.5 to 1 |

The two-step path asks for more profit in total, but each target is smaller than the loss limit, and the second is much smaller. A trader who wins slowly and steadily may find two steps easier. A trader who reaches targets quickly may prefer one. These numbers are an example, so check each program's real figures on its [firm page](https://www.propfirmduel.com/firms/).

## Which should you choose?

Choose one step if you want the fastest path and your strategy reaches targets without large drawdowns. Choose two steps if you trade steadily and prefer smaller targets, even if it takes longer. Either way, read the funded rules too, since they decide how you get paid. [How prop firm evaluations work](https://www.propfirmduel.com/how-prop-firm-evaluations-work/) covers the rest.

## Common questions

### Is one step easier than two steps?

Not automatically. One step is faster, but the single target may be larger or the limits tighter.

### Do both phases have the same rules?

Often the loss limits stay the same and only the target changes, but firms vary. Read both phases.

### Do futures prop firms offer two-step challenges?

Rarely. Most futures programs use one step. See [futures prop firms explained](https://www.propfirmduel.com/futures-prop-firms-explained/) and [forex prop firms explained](https://www.propfirmduel.com/forex-prop-firms-explained/).
