**Different prop firm rules matter to different traders.** A scalper cares most about daily limits, consistency and costs per trade. A day trader who lets winners run cares about the drawdown type. A swing trader needs to know whether overnight and weekend holds are allowed at all.

## Key takeaways

- Match the program to how you trade today, not how you'd like to trade.
- Intraday trailing drawdown is hardest on traders who hold winners through pullbacks.
- Many futures programs require you to be flat by a set time each day.
- Consistency rules are hardest on traders with one big day a week.

## Scalpers

Scalpers make many small trades with fast exits. The rules that matter most:

- **Daily loss limit:** a string of small losses adds up fast. Know whether hitting the limit pauses you or ends the account. See [the daily loss limit](https://www.propfirmduel.com/daily-loss-limit-explained/).
- **Costs per trade:** commissions and platform fees multiply with trade count.
- **Minimum hold times:** a few firms restrict very short trades. Check the conduct rules.

Intraday trailing drawdown is less of a problem for scalpers, because they take profit before it can pull back.

## Day traders who hold winners

Trades that last minutes to hours, flat by the close. Here the drawdown type matters most. Intraday trailing drawdown raises your floor on open profit, so a winner that pulls back costs you room. End-of-day drawdown, used by 33 of 38 futures programs we track that publish a type, only moves at the close. See [end-of-day drawdown](https://www.propfirmduel.com/end-of-day-drawdown/).

## Traders with one big day a week

If most of your profit comes from one strong day, consistency rules will slow you down. With a 40% rule and a $3,000 target, a $2,000 day means you need $5,000 in total to pass. Look for programs with a 50% rule or none. See [the consistency rule](https://www.propfirmduel.com/prop-firm-consistency-rule/) and [prop firms with no consistency rule](https://www.propfirmduel.com/no-consistency-rule-prop-firms/).

## News traders

If you trade scheduled releases, the news rule decides whether you can trade your strategy at all. All 7 futures programs we track that publish a clear news policy allow it, but check the funded rules too. See [news trading rules](https://www.propfirmduel.com/prop-firm-news-trading-rules/).

## Swing traders

Many futures programs require you to be flat before the session closes, and many don't allow weekend holds. Some forex, crypto and stock programs offer swing options. [Trade The Pool](https://www.propfirmduel.com/trade-the-pool/), for example, sells separate day-trade and swing accounts for stocks. See [stock prop firms explained](https://www.propfirmduel.com/stock-prop-firms-explained/).

## A worked example

Say you're a day trader who often sees trades run $800 in your favor before you exit at $400\. On intraday trailing drawdown, each of those trades raises your floor by $800 while only adding $400 to your balance, costing you $400 of room every time. On end-of-day drawdown, the same trade simply adds $400\. Same trader, same trades, very different accounts.

## How to filter programs by style

The [Match Quiz](https://www.propfirmduel.com/match-quiz/) filters every program by these rules, and [Compare](https://www.propfirmduel.com/compare/) puts programs side by side. For the full process, see [how to choose a prop firm](https://www.propfirmduel.com/how-to-choose-a-prop-firm/).

## Common questions

### Which rules matter most for scalping?

The daily loss limit, costs per trade and any minimum hold time.

### Can I hold trades over the weekend?

Many futures programs don't allow it. Some forex, crypto and stock swing programs do. It's in the rules.

### What if my style changes?

Choose for how you trade today, and check the rules again before your next purchase.
